We started off the week by learning the basics. I printed off some pictures of fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, firemen, a bell, a fire truck, a dalmation and some others. We talked about the different pictures so Cash could learn the names and how they are each used. We don't have a fire hydrant close, so we looked on You Tube and found some fun videos about them.
We do have a fire extinguisher though. Heath got it out one night and showed the boys the different parts of it. He wanted to spray it so the boys could see it in action, but it was too late, and obviously, that needed to be done outside.
"You just pull this pin and squeeze the handle." This was a great learning time for me, too.
B wanted it squeeze the handle, but was disappointed when nothing happened.
"Heavy!" he said.
We also used our water colors to paint a lovely picture for our firefighter friends. I helped B color his, and then silly me forgot them when we went to visit the firehouse.
Cash did a great job on his thank you picture and his fire truck. We did go back three days later to give the firemen our paintings.
We reviewed shapes by making a fire truck.
We also made some cool patterns. I'll have to include here that Cash doesn't like glue sticks anymore. He wanted to lay them where they go and, "Mommy glue them."
We also got out ALL of Cash and Baylen's fire trucks. I didn't realize that we had so many up in the playroom. But last week, they were all parked in a "firehouse" that we made for them in the living room.
We also practiced Stop, Drop and Roll! A friend had a great idea to cut flames out of felt and tape them on. The idea was to roll until the flames came off. The first time I demonstrated this, it was a disaster. I stopped, dropped and when I rolled, Cash ran to the garage to get the fire extinguisher that he had learned about the night before. Baylen loves stickers, so he was crying because he wanted "tickers on me!" We tried it again later, and Cash practiced the Stop, Drop and Roll and even remembered to cover his eyes.
Throughout the week, we learned about Moses and the burning bush from Exodus 3. When we read about the story in his Bible, Cash told me that Moses needed a fire extinguisher, too. (You can tell that Heath's lesson about fire extinguishers really stuck with him.) We also memorized a verse from Jeremiah that compared God's word to fire, and we ended the week with a trip with our friends to a local firehouse. We had fun with our themed week, but Cash kept asking when he was going to learn a new letter. I'm so happy that he likes learning and having fun with Mommy and his "school games."
