Inchworms and leaves

Last Sunday was another gorgeous fall day. After church, we came home for lunch and then the boys laid down for the naps. Heath and I did some things around the house, and around 3:30 they started waking up. It was a nice afternoon, so Heath decided to take the boys for a nature walk around the yard. I suggested that they find different kinds of leaves, one from each of the many different trees we have. They walked down the gravel road looking at all the trees. They walked in the backyard and the front yard, and overall came up with around ten or eleven different types.

Cash enjoyed the hunt for different kinds of leaves. This one was "yellow wid brown pots."

Heath has a passion for trees and loves learning the different types and figuring out what kinds of tress we have. He's trying to teach both the boys how to tell an oak from a hickory from a dogwood...

You can tell B is really interested in it all. :)

Here's the (almost) final product. Since we were working on I is for inchworm, we glued our leaves to this piece of packing paper (I use anything and everything), and then I glued half an inchworm to each of the leaves. It was Cash's job to glue the other half of the inchworm to the leaves.

He finished the project with no problem. He loves gluing, so it was an added bonus to the fun of the afternoon. Heath came behind him and wrote the names of the trees under each leaf. This was more for my sake than Cash's or B's since they can't read. Honestly, I have a hard time remembering the names of the trees, too. So I guess this was a learning project for the whole family!
